It started off normally enough: I changed Asuka’s hair, added some bunny ears, and put some glasses on her. Somehow, this game managed to make even that aspect unenjoyable and unsettling. I love changing hair color, I love cute outfits, and I live for constructing a top-tier cutie. Let me clarify something: I love customization. The game continues to cater to some sort of creepy fantasy by allowing players to customize Asuka. I can assure you, these are very practical undergarments. Yes, I could go back and unlock the various unique reactions depending on where I touched her but that not only felt weird, it was, quite frankly, boring. Somehow this game manages to take something that should be titillating and sensual and turns it into a disturbing chore. The skill needed to work my way through Asuka’s fantasies was minimal and I was able to clear the game within 2 hours.
There was the slightest chance that I could overlook the repulsion I felt while playing the game if it was a game that was challenging. The lack of exposition, character development, and actual skill needed to play the game left me wondering: is this even really a game? We never learn about Asuka and why she loves you she is simply an empty vessel onto which people can project their fantasies. This isn’t possible in SENRAN KAGURA Reflexions. That said, I’ve been able to ignore the sexist implications of a game before and just enjoy it for what it is. The result is just unsettling you are rewarded for touching a woman however you please with little regard to actually learning what she likes. I was rewarded with this graphic by slapping her thighs and touching her hands. This has no effect on the game or Asuka and exists purely to feed into the weird relationship dynamic of the game.
If all of that fails to satisfy your desire to freely touch a woman with no recourse, the game throws in a “water gun mode”, where you can spray Asuka with water. Romance the lady, you know? Well, I thought wrong. There seemed to be practically no area where touching was discouraged and all types of grabs (including slaps) were rewarded with a victorious special massage graphic. Depending on where you touch Asuka, she reacts differently which is indicated with different colors A hand touch might elicit a gentle red, where a thigh touch might glow purple. I thought that a game about intimacy and romance would encourage players to work up to touching intimate areas. It begins with two hands showing up on screen and wiggling expectantly, the result of which is just creepy. The “dirtiness” I mentioned earlier is borne from the massage mechanic itself. This isn’t my issue with SENRAN KAGURA Reflexions. This is what I expected from the plot of a game about massaging ladies. Nothing says beautiful love story like an afterschool hand massage. As you continue to work your way through her hands and fantasies, she eventually confesses her feelings for you. These include massaging her when she is dressed as a fantasy character or as a J-pop idol. Depending on where you apply pressure on her hands, you are sent into one of her bizarre massage fantasies.
Out of nowhere, she asks you to massage her hands. After school one day, a classmate named Asuka asks you to meet with her. The plot of SENRAN KAGURA Reflexions is simple enough. Everything about this game left me feeling a little disgusted at myself for playing it. I mean, yes, the game is weird. But, my experience playing through SENRAN KAGURA Reflexions did not end in me laughing at the absurdity of the situation. A massage simulator? One with anime girls swooning at my touch? Everything about this niche game seemed catered to my personal tastes. Given that I also love weird games, it was only natural that SENRAN KAGURA Reflexions caught my eye. Heck, I have even been known to enjoy an eroge (erotic game) in my day. Anyone who knows me knows that I love games with cute anime girls.
